Bohemian Rhapsody movie review and …Freddie Mercury was sure a unique character! I Heart Character November 2nd

Today I will combine my I Heart Character’s meme with a short movie review because said movie had such a unique character and it’s this week’s prompt!

I Heart Characters! is a weekly meme hosted by Dani @ Perspective of a Writer to showcase our book blogger lover for characters! Each week she’ll supply a topic and you’ll supply the character. Post on whatever day suits you, about characters from whatever media you love (books, movies, K-dramas, television, manga, anime, webtoons, whatever!) and link up on Thursday so YOU and others can blog hop and share the character love.

November 1st –  A Unique Character (No prompt will ever fit this character because they are so creative, different or rare!)

I apologize to Dani for posting late but yesterday evening I had a girls night out at the movie and came back with my unique character of the day!

For those who don’t know it yet, Bohemian Rhapsody is a movie retelling the birth and ascend of Queen with a huge focus on its star Freddie Mercury.

I adored the movie!

First because it is filled to the brim with legendary songs from Queen. They got the most well known songs and we learn how these songs were created. I find it fascinating this creative process. I am a huge admirer of artists of all kind and let me tell you that Freddie Mercury was a genius!

But he was not the sole actor behind these songs even if he was the biggest brain behind them.

No, what I learned and really was amazed with was that every member of the group was instantly on board when Freddie Mercury came up with crazy ideas! Think for two seconds now. They are already really well known and they have to produce a second album. Their producer, holding the big bucks wants them to stay in the same sound and genre but Freddie Mercury comes with this idea to introduce opera in what is a rock band.

Opera!

Now we have many groups like Nightwish, Kamelot and Skillet and …who use classical instruments or opera in their songs even as they are a rock band but at that time it was revolutionary!!! Freddie was a visionary! He had a unique perception of the creative process, art and music.

The members of the band Brian May and Roger Taylor instantly backed up Freddie.

Even when he asked them to sing higher and higher and higher. Even when he asked to put coins, many many coins, on the drums to make new sounds!

And that was the strength of Queen!

Freddie was the head and soul but every member was an organic part of this incredible process. Like a family.

Another time a song emerged while Freddie was fighting with a band member and a third one took the guitar and played the same three notes again and again. Giving a beat. A pulse. A backbone to a new song.

Fascinating!

Second I loved the movie because we get to know who Freddie Mercury was. Of course he was no angel and there were many excessess like drugs and countless lovers BUT what I learned and that you may know already was that Freddie Mercury was born in Zanzibar. His family was Parsis from India. The family religion was zoroastrianism.

What difference does it make?

Well a huge difference in my eyes because in the 70ies homosexuality was already frowned upon but I can imagine that in his family it was even more difficult to accept as zoroastrian religion does not accept gay.

So once again I am in awe because he did claim who he truly was. And it must have been really really difficult. It shows a huge character’s strength going against the sexual norm but also choosing an artistic career instead of another more conventional one like his father wanted.

He fought to be accepted for who he was. A showman. An artist needing to express his feelings and genius. Someone who does not fit into the traditional mould. Someone brilliant and unique.

I also learned about Mary, his at one time fiancee turned lifetime friend and the role she played in his life.

I had no clue about her existence her the importance in Freddie’s life.

Third I loved the movie because every detail was studied to make us live in the 70ies then the 80ies.

It was lush. I am born in 1970 so I recognized everything. The hair. Lots and lots of long hair LOL

The strass, the glamour. Freddie was extravagant and eccentric. The cars. The ….

Now I was wondering all along if the actor, Rami Malek whose performance and interpretation is absolutely stunning was really singing these songs as I was hearing Freddie all along! Well it’s a bit or everything. He really sings but the band members mixed his voice here and there with Freddie’s voice as well as Marc Martel *another incredible winger* voice.

Last parting words about the movie: the cast was just extraordinary and every actor looked exactly like the band members. It was really mind boggling!

Here is my choice of the day: Freddie Mercury, singer, genius, brilliant mind, exceptional artist, unconventional and courageous beyond everything to own who he was, as different as society wanted him to be. It ended costing him his life …

I hope you enjoyed the trailers and I urge you to go watch this movie as you will have an exceptional time!

Now do tell me all about a unique character!

Thansk for reading!

I absolutely love Queen. They did so much weird and risky stuff at the time, and it paved the way for so much great music.
