Hi dear friends,

Today I am very happy to welcome a friend on the blog! Her name is Angela and she is the owner of Reading Frenzy book blog! I met her through our common passion for books and romance!

When she sent me her post I was so pleased and yes swooned a little because it’s dang sweet! And true.

Couples That Read Together Stay Together by Angela

I was in my tweens when I discovered my love of reading. I read a variety of genres, but I’ve always gravitated toward romance novels and mysteries. My husband is also a reader, but he primarily reads science fiction, plays, and graphic novels.

When I was pregnant with my first child, I was placed on bed rest. Being forced to stay in bed was great for the first few days, but after a couple weeks I was bored out of my mind. There is only so much daytime television one can watch before one loses one’s sanity.

I wasn’t the voracious reader that I am now, but I enjoyed reading. Back then there was no such thing as a Kindle, so I grabbed my laptop, browsed my local library’s catalog, and sent my husband to pick up a stack of books for me that I placed on hold. One of those books was a romantic suspense novel titled Naked in Death by J.D. Robb.

The book centers around Eve Dallas, one truly badass New York City homicide cop, who tries to solve the murder of a woman found naked. Her prime suspect is Roarke – no last name; just Roarke. He’s a sexy Irish billionaire with a questionable, almost certainly criminal, past. Eve tries to fight their growing attraction while proving that Roarke is—or isn’t—the killer. The case is intriguing, but it’s the characters themselves that are fascinating. The story is set about 50 years in the future so it has a fun futuristic setting, but it maintains a sense of reality. For example, there’s a vaccine to prevent cancer, but they still can’t cure the common cold. Real coffee is a rare commodity; most people can have to drink a soy-based version (*shudder*).

I loved the book, and when I finished I was thrilled to discover that it is the first book in a series. I sent my hubby back to the library to get the next book few books. I began to think he might enjoy the books as well. It does have a sci-fi element, after all. There is romance, but the tone is suspenseful and the focus is always on a murder mystery. I suggested my husband read Naked in Death and he did! Then he read the next book, and the next one, and it wasn’t long before he was hooked too.

We began to have nightly discussions about the plots, what parts we found funny or surprising, and what things we loved about the characters. It was like our own little book club. It was a fantastic way to re-connect over our shared loved for the In Death series, and it made my pregnancy a bit easier to bear. We devoured the entire series. I was sad to see it end, but then I discovered something wonderful. J.D. Robb is the pen name of Nora Roberts, and she releases two new In Death books every year.

To this day we anxiously wait for each new release. I made a deal with my husband that he could only read a new book after I read it first. I mean, I’m the one who discovered the series after all. There are nearly 50 books in the series at this point, and J.D. Robb shows no signs of stopping. We now own hardcovers of almost all the books, and I must say they look quite pretty on our bookshelves.

Nora Roberts lives in my home state, and my husband took me for a weekend getaway to attend one of her local signings. Who knew that books could bring couples together?

Angela’s bio

Hey there, I’m Angela! Thanks for stopping by my blog. If you’re a fellow romance addict, you’ve come to the right place. There’s nothing quite like getting lost in a good love story to help you escape from reality for a little while. I’m fairly obsessed with anything book related, and I love to share that passion with other readers.

I’m married and have three daughters. My love affair with books began in my tween years when I discovered Judy Blume. I’ve been a book nerd ever since. My Kindle has truly rocked my world and the two of us are never apart. If there’s a 12-step program for my 1-click addiction I don’t want to know about it.

I’m a wife, musical theatre lover, and unpaid hair stylist/ fashion consultant/ personal chef/ tutor/ chauffeur/ therapist—aka mom to three daughters. Feel free to email me at readingfrenzyblog@gmail.com.

  2. I love that you and your husband share some of the same reads, Angela! My husband and I do the same sometimes. Except we’re usually reading it at the same time (me on my Kindle app, and him on his) and we discuss as we go. It’s so fun to share the reading experience. 🙂

  9. I love this! My husband will read almost anything I tell him to, however he only listens to audio books or read graphic novels. I do enjoy being able to talk to him about the books once he’s read them.
