Aurora Burning by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman. Review of a book I don’t know how to rate. Some things I HATE other things I LOVE

Synopsis

Our heroes are back… kind of. From the bestselling co-authors of the Illuminae Files comes the second book in the epic series about a squad of misfits, losers, and discipline cases who just might be the galaxy’s best hope for survival.First, the bad news: an ancient evil—you know, your standard consume-all-life-in-the-galaxy deal—is about to be unleashed. The good news? Squad 312 is standing by to save the day. They’ve just got to take care of a few small distractions first.

Like the clan of gremps who’d like to rearrange their favorite faces.

And the cadre of illegit GIA agents with creepy flowers where their eyes used to be, who’ll stop at nothing to get their hands on Auri.

Then there’s Kal’s long-lost sister, who’s not exactly happy to see her baby brother, and has a Syldrathi army at her back. With half the known galaxy on their tails, Squad 312 has never felt so wanted.

When they learn the Hadfield has been found, it’s time to come out of hiding. Two centuries ago, the colony ship vanished, leaving Auri as its sole survivor. Now, its black box might be what saves them. But time is short, and if Auri can’t learn to master her powers as a Trigger, the squad and all their admirers are going to be deader than the Great Ultrasaur of Abraaxis IV.

Shocking revelations, bank heists, mysterious gifts, inappropriately tight bodysuits, and an epic firefight will determine the fate of the Aurora Legion’s most unforgettable heroes—and maybe the rest of the galaxy as well.

Review

How do you rate a book where:

-you adore every single character of the squad but want to throttle some so bad for making ridiculous choices (I may have screamed at my book while readwalking, earning me a handful of aghast looks from fellow pedestrians);

-there is an overload of action, never a dull moment but so much twists and shocking revelations that it gets too much for your poor heart (I am not in the grave yet but my heart is not in his twenties anymore Jay and Amie, some consideration please);

-the humor gets you every single time (even Zila is attempting some humors folks!) but the revelations have you questioning your beliefs in what is right or wrong for your heroes (let’s just say that Fifty Shades of Grey is a cake walk compared with Aurora Burning and no, whips are not involved, just extra tight pants showing great Syldrathi butts);

-the author promised in an accompanying letter of your special edition that our feelings would die but our favorite characters would be safe when this ended like THAT and you are thinking that they were liars pants on fire?

-you learn so many shocking secrets (some I had guessed for Kal, some had me blindsided for the twins) that you truly don’t know what’s more in store for you?

Well when you know the answer to these questions, you tell me because I don’t have any idea!

I loved:

Zila’s change and that we got to see into her past. She is in fact quite amazing and will drive vans and spaceships like a champ! Forget your perm though or get super strong hairspray.

““Zila?”
“Squad,” she says calmly, “please secure your safety harnesses.”

Kal of course and I think what he did to join the Aurora legion is amazing. What’s been done to him and how the others treated him is totally unfair! I will begin a petition today addressed to Jay and Amie to have them coddle him in the next book (IF he has survived because seeing how things were left it’s not a sure thing);

-the diversion scene in the Repository! Pure gleeful moment!!!!

-the author’s note explaining things at the beginning of some chapters as they were so much fun!

Tyler and his abs and jokes about said abs. Once he left the golden boy’s act behind and has been roughed up some he really became more relatable.

“Poor baby,” she coos. “Madam Badass really did a number on the boys, huh?”
“I mean, I can always adopt,” he whimpers.”

I hated:

how Auri evolved. I didn’t like the frightened kid but I didn’t like the unshakable b!tch either. Plus honestly Kal hid something yes, but she didn’t have to treat him like that! Neither Scarlett by the way! What he has sacrificed and it was still not enough????? COME ON guys!

-the “too many drama or odds against you”. Somehow too much is too much you know?

the Eshvaren. I don’t like the Ra’haam either so that’s like being between a rock and a hard place.

the ending. SERIOUSLY???? You plan to leave us like that?

Now it’s time to talk! Have you read it? What did you think of it?

Thanks for reading.

    It seems like this book was definitely a mix of highs and lows for you! I am glad you could enjoy the fast paced plot and a lot of the characters – although the decisions they made were more questionable.
