Synopsys

Never in a million years did I think it would be Ian Parker who saved me…I know I should stay away from Ian Parker. But when my drug-dealing stepdad kicks me out, I have nowhere to go. Squatting in an abandoned shed on Ian’s grandpa’s farm seems like as good a plan as any. Ian finds me there, of course, and he insists on me moving into his spare room. I should say no, but the appeal of a roof and a warm bed is too much. Not to mention Ian’s brown eyes and strong arms. We’re nothing alike, but the spark between us is undeniable. My life is finally looking up. Until I call the cops on my stepdad and unintentionally get my pregnant mom arrested. Now I have to sacrifice my dreams to take care of my mom’s baby. She’s the only family I have left. Meanwhile, Ian’s band is taking off; his dreams are coming true. Ian is my one chance at love. I just hope he doesn’t become the one chance that got away.

Review

3,75 stars   Well I am really feeling all alone like the odd sheep as the time has come to write my review. Enthusiastic reviews are piling up for this story, many speaks about angst and perfection while I did like the book (it’s Brittainy we are speaking of and the day I’ll dislike one of her stories will probably be when hell has frozen) but was not as amazed by it as I usually am. And I feel bereft as I had rated Southern Storm 5 stars, as The Gravity of Us is among my best of the best books and as this one had seemingly all the ingredients to be a resounding success!   So why not me?   I have raked my brain to come with an explanation and I think that what one of the other reviewers said about it “being angsty but not as heavy as her other books” might be the key.   Let’s get back now and talk about what this book is about and what I liked.   This book is a enemies to lovers kind of books, happening in a small town where most people despair and many take meths, ruining their lives. At the beginning of the story, Hazel who has turned 18 dreams of leaving this town, going to college and protecting her pregnant mom from her dealer of a boyfriend. As they live in near poverty, Hazel will ask Big Paw for a job at his ranch. Not to cook or anything no, as a ranch hand as she needs the pay to afford vitamins and doctor visits for her mom.   Let’s say right away that I love Hazel and that every reader will most likely love her. She is courageous, works like three men on a ranch, takes care of everyone like a mother hen and is no doormat. The proof lies in her first encounter with Ian, Big Paw’s grandson and town golden boy, who is determined for personal reasons to make Hazel’s life a living hell. Ian does not want hazel on his ranch. Only, Hazel rises to every challenge Ian throws her way. These were really “Atta girl” moments!   That first scene with Ian made him seem like a jerk. And how he acted with hazel in the beginning made me want to throttle him! But soon enough we grasped his reasons and how this was all an act as he was a good guy inside.   I loved: – Hazel and Ian. – Big Paw so gruff but with a golden heart. -The backstory that we’ll discover later on. -Hazel’s support of Ian’s dream and her will to help her family -The sweet in this story   But…I missed something to really drown me in the character’s feelings. Hell if I know why exactly but if you had angst I never felt overcome by it. That’s why I give this very personal and very biased rating of 3,75, all knowing that I will read the next Brittainy as she remains one of my top favorite authors. That was just one story that was not completely for me. Chances are high though that you will be among the 5 stars raters so don’t let this discourage you.   Thank you to the publisher Montlake Romance for my gifted copy. It had no influence whatsoever on my always honest and willing review.

  1. Some books just don’t gel with everyone, it happens Sophie but kudos to sticking to your guns and leaving a true review!

  2. Ahhh, sorry to hear that it didn’t pull you in and swallow you whole as you’d hoped it would! Great honest review, Sophie. 🙂

    1. Thank you Lashaan!

  3. To me, 3.75 is still a truly solid, enjoyable read! They can’t all be 5-star perfection, even from our favorite authors. 🙂

  4. I’ve been seeing nothing but sparkles and angsty rainbows for this book, Sophie, so it’s nice to read something to balance out the expectations a little bit!
Brittainy C. Cherry is on my “TBR – RARE” list for next summer (if Covid behaves!) and I was eyeballing this one as a place to start. 🙂

    1. Brittainy is excelletn honestly but if you have to read only one of her books, I’d recommend the Gravity of Us or Southern Storm!

  5. Love your candor Sophie, and I totally get it. Sometimes expectations get high with an author that’s blown you away in the past, and it’s hard when they fall short!

  6. I am sorry that it didn’t quite knock your socks off like you had hoped! It does sound like it has a great premise and I do love enemies to lovers stories. 🙂

    1. This author is amazing and I am clearly in the minority here!

  7. Sometimes you don’t love a book as much as you want to, it happens. But that doesn’t mean it’s a bad book per se. Great review!

    1. Thank you Stephanie!
